The Education (School Day and School Year) Regulations (1999) require all maintained schools to open for teaching for 190 days a year, offering 380 sessions. The above table sets out dates for 195 days. Pupils are to be released for a further 5 days for the purpose of teachers’ staff development (INSET). These days can be taken as inset days or equivalent twilight sessions.
The Education (School Day and School Year) (England) (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2021 reduced the required number to 378 sessions for this academic year only to account for the additional bank holiday on 3 June 2022 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. In effect this means that each Hackney school will offer one fewer teaching day than indicated in the above date as best suits their local arrangements. You are advised to check terms dates with your children’s schools directly.
Academies, free schools, and voluntary-aided schools are able to set their own dates but will be asked to set the same or similar dates in the interest of parents who may have children at different schools.
